Tips for choosing a quality diamond:

Diamonds in all shapes and sizes

Diamond Characteristics - The Four Cs

The value of a diamond is determined by characteristics called the Four Cs. The Four Cs include: cut, color, clarity and carat-weight.
  1. Cut. Not to be confused with the shape of the diamond, cut refers to the arrangement of a diamond's facets. Cut is the most important of the 4Cs because it determines the optimum combination of brilliance, dispersion, and scintillation. This combination has the greatest effect on a diamond's beauty. Cut is the only "C" under man's control. A diamond which is "ideal cut" captures and releases the maximum play of light.   See an ideal cut table.

  2. Color. Diamonds range from colorless, the rarest and most valuable, to yellowish, with a spectrum of shadings in between. Color can only be seen with proper lighting against a white background.   See color grading scale.

  3. Clarity. Clarity is the degree to which tiny marks of nature called inclusions are present in the diamond. A "flawless" diamond has no inclusions which are visible under 10-power magnification. See clarity grading scale.

  4. Carat-Weight. This is the standard measurement for diamond size. The most obvious variable, it is actually the least important in determining the brilliance and beauty of a diamond.   See carat-weight scale.

Diamond Cuts

Ideal Cut
When a round brilliant diamond has been cut to "Ideal" proportions by a master cutter, it is splendid to behold. When a diamond is cut to the ideal proportions, all of the light entering from any direction is totally reflected through the top and is dispersed into a display of sparkling flashes and rainbow colors. See above link to table under 4Cs 'Cut'.

Premium Cut
A Premium Cut diamond demonstrates subtle variations from the Ideal Cut. Although dimensional differences affect a diamond's reflection of light, a Premium Cut still achieves a harmonious balance between its proportions and the display of brilliance.

Inferior Cut
Most diamonds are "spread" in their cutting to retain maximum weight from the original rough. A heavier diamond will result, but at a dramatic sacrifice of potential fire and brilliance.

  • When a diamond is cut too deep, the center of the diamond will appear to be dark.
  • When a diamond is cut too shallow, light leaks out of the bottom, brilliance is lost and the diamond appears watery, glassy and dark.
