  • The natural world including botany, zoology, and geology all had themes in fine jewelry.
  • The hair styles and necklines of the 1830s favored long, dramatic earrings.
  • Sleeve length in the 1840s featured a woman's graceful hands and therefore rings and bracelets were popular.
  • Matched pairs of bracelets were popular in the 1850s, along with small earrings (hairstyles covered most of the ears) and large brooches.
  • Gold was discovered in America in 1849 and Australia in 1851.
  • Parures and demi-parures were in vogue. A parure is a matched set of multiple pieces usually boxed in a fitted case. I.e. necklace, earrings, bracelets, ring and brooch, of which several convertible options could be utilized to change the jewelry. Demi-parure was a smaller matched set.
