Alexandrite
This unusual gem was named in honor of Alexander II, Czar of Russia, on whose birthday it was discovered in 1830. Remarkably, the red and green of alexandrite were also the colors of the Russian Imperial Guard.

This natural change in color is alexandrite's most extraordinary feature: from red under incandescent light, to green in sunlight or fluorescent light. The finest gems are like emerald by day, and ruby by night.

While found in Russia, Africa, South America, and the Far East, alexandrite is nonetheless quite rare. There are no known ways of enhancing this unique stone.
